Which Battery Chemistry for Your Storage Pack? (and What It Means for the BMS)

The Chemistry You Choose Changes the BMS You Need

For an energy-storage pack, the cell chemistry decides more than energy density and cost — it sets the voltage window, the number of cells in series, and the protection thresholds the battery management system (BMS) must use. This guide compares the four chemistries used in storage — LiFePO4 (LFP), NMC (nickel manganese cobalt), LTO (lithium titanate), and sodium-ion — and what each means when you choose a BMS. For the full BMS selection steps, start from the BMS selection guide.

Four Chemistries at a Glance

The table shows representative values — actual figures vary by manufacturer and cell, so confirm your cell's datasheet.

Chemistry Nominal cell V Charge / discharge cut-off Relative cycle life Key trait
LiFePO4 (LFP) ~3.2 V ~3.65 V / ~2.5 V High (~3,000–6,000) Safe, long-life, mainstream storage
NMC (Li-ion) ~3.6–3.7 V ~4.2 V / ~2.5–3.0 V Moderate (~1,000–2,000) High energy density, compact
LTO ~2.3 V ~2.8 V / ~1.5 V Very high (up to ~20,000–30,000) Extreme cycle/temperature, fast charge; lower energy density
Sodium-ion ~2.9–3.1 V ~3.45–4.0 V / ~1.5 V Emerging (cell-dependent) Good low-temperature performance; developing supply

How to Think About the Choice

LiFePO4 — the default for most home and commercial storage.

A strong balance of safety, long cycle life, and cost. If you have no reason to choose otherwise, LiFePO4 is usually the starting point.

NMC — when energy density and compactness matter most.

Higher energy density in a smaller, lighter pack, at the cost of fewer cycles and tighter thermal management.

LTO — for extreme cycle life, fast charging, and wide temperatures.

A niche but durable choice where longevity and temperature range outweigh energy density. → Choosing a BMS for LTO.

Sodium-ion — an emerging option for cold climates and supply diversification.

Promising low-temperature behaviour and a different supply chain, with a developing ecosystem. → Choosing a BMS for sodium-ion.

What Each Chemistry Means for the BMS

Whichever chemistry you choose, the BMS must be configured for it:

Protection thresholds.

Over-voltage, under-voltage, and balancing limits differ by chemistry — a BMS set for one chemistry will mis-protect another.

Series count.

Because nominal cell voltage differs, the number of cells in series for a target pack voltage changes — LTO needs the most cells, NMC the fewest, for the same voltage.

State-of-charge estimation.

SOC is read from the chemistry's own voltage curve; using the wrong curve reports the wrong charge level.

DALY: One BMS Partner Across All Four Chemistries

DALY manufactures battery management systems for LiFePO4, NMC, LTO, and sodium-ion. The protection thresholds, series count, state-of-charge estimation, and balancing are configured to your specific cell — so you can standardise on one BMS partner across different chemistries. Send your cell datasheet and pack design, and the DALY engineering team will confirm the correct configuration for your chosen chemistry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Which chemistry is best for home solar storage?

LiFePO4 is the mainstream choice for its balance of safety, cycle life, and cost. NMC, LTO, and sodium-ion suit specific priorities — compactness, extreme longevity/temperature, or cold-climate and supply diversification.

Q2Can one BMS handle different chemistries?

A BMS must be configured for the specific chemistry — its thresholds, series count, and SOC curve. The same supplier can provide BMS for different chemistries, but each pack's BMS is set for its own cells.

Q3Why does chemistry change the number of cells in series?

Each chemistry has a different nominal cell voltage, so reaching a target pack voltage takes a different number of cells — for example LTO (~2.3V) needs more cells than LiFePO4 (~3.2V) for the same voltage.
