BMS and Smart Charger Compatibility: What to Confirm Before Integration

This guide answers one question: how do you confirm that a BMS and smart charger can actually communicate and operate together before integration?

Key Selection Rule: Electrical suitability comes first; matching communication ports alone does not prove protocol compatibility.

Start with the Real Compatibility Question

If a charger and a BMS both have communication functions, that does not automatically mean they can work together. Compatibility depends on the interface, the communication protocol, the messages exchanged and the control behavior expected by the charging system.

First Confirm the Battery and Charging Requirements

Before checking communication, confirm battery chemistry, exact series count, target charging voltage and required charging current. Communication cannot correct a charger that is electrically unsuitable for the battery.

Interface and Protocol Are Different

CAN, RS485 and other interfaces describe how devices connect electrically. The protocol defines what the messages mean. Two devices can use the same physical interface and still be incompatible if they use different message definitions.

Same interface ≠ compatible charger-BMS communication.

Define What the Charger and BMS Must Exchange

List the information or commands required by the charging system. Depending on the project, this may include charge enable/disable, requested voltage or current limits, battery status, temperature or fault information. Do not assume every charger-BMS pair uses the same data.

Verify the Exact DALY Smart Charger Configuration
