The fastest way to lose money on an Indian EV battery pack is to size the BMS by continuous load alone. The pack runs fine on level roads, then nuisance-trips the first time the vehicle climbs a flyover with a full passenger load, or an e-loader takes on heavy cargo. The cells are fine — the BMS was simply matched to the wrong current profile.
India's EV market reached roughly 2.45 million units in FY2026 (Autocar Professional / Vahan), so the volume opportunity is real — but winning OEM business comes down to three questions every pack manufacturer actually asks: what current rating do I need, can it pass AIS-156, and can you support my production? This guide answers all three.
1. What Current Rating Does Your Vehicle Need?
Indian EV duty cycles are harder on the BMS than the cruising current suggests. Every signal-stop acceleration, flyover climb, full passenger load, and monsoon-flooded road creates a transient well above the average draw. A BMS rated only for cruising current will trip in real service. The rule: size the continuous rating with meaningful headroom above normal operating current, and confirm peak transients with the supplier for your platform.
Typical continuous-current ranges by vehicle type (confirm against your motor controller and load):
| Vehicle type | Power | Typical BMS continuous range |
|---|---|---|
| Entry e-scooter | 1-2 kW | 40-60A |
| Mid / performance e-scooter | 2-5 kW | 60-150A |
| E-motorcycle / shared mobility | 6-8 kW | 150-250A |
| Standard e-rickshaw (passenger) | 1.5-3 kW | 80-200A |
| E-loader / cargo three-wheeler | — | 150-400A |
| Light commercial EV / industrial cargo | — | 400-800A |
2. DALY High-Current Range: 80A to 800A
DALY covers this full range with two product lines, so a manufacturer can source the whole vehicle portfolio from one supplier:
Mini-Red Series80-400A (two- and three-wheeler OEM)
Purpose-built for e-scooter, e-rickshaw, and e-loader production. Three high-current variants: AK (80-100A), AM (150-200A), and AS (250-400A). All share OEM-ready interfaces — Key Switch input, Buzzer output, Pre-charge (needed for swap-compatible designs), and UART with optional RS485/CAN for motor-controller integration. All support LFP (most common in India), NCM, and LTO via app configuration.
D Series400-800A (heavy commercial / industrial)
For loads beyond the Mini-Red AS — heavy commercial EVs and industrial cargo vehicles — the D Series provides 400-800A continuous, 8-32S LFP support (covering 24V to 96V+), three independent UART channels for simultaneous motor-controller, display, and telematics connection, and 2A parallel current limiting for parallel pack designs. Its 3000g industrial enclosure reflects the enhanced heat dissipation and structural strength sustained heavy duty requires.
A useful distinction: Mini-Red AS and D Series both reach 400A, but Mini-Red AS suits three-wheeler OEM production (lighter, Bluetooth/IoT, lower MOQ), while D Series suits heavy industrial duty (rugged enclosure, multi-channel comms, parallel architectures).
3. Can It Pass AIS-156 Phase 2?
For L-category EVs (e-rickshaws, e-scooters, e-three-wheelers), AIS-156 Amendment 3 is mandatory — Phase 1 from 1 December 2022, Phase 2 from 31 March 2023. No type approval, no sale, so this is a hard gate for every OEM.
Phase 2 places specific demands on the BMS and pack: microprocessor-based BMS with full protection, cell balancing, at least four temperature sensors, audio-visual warning for thermal events, EMC testing per AIS 004, BIS IS 16893-certified cells, and IPX7 ingress protection at the pack level.
How DALY's high-current BMS supports compliance:
- Microprocessor-based architecture with the full protection suite (over-charge / discharge / current / temperature, short-circuit)
- Cell balancing — 100mA passive (Mini-Red Smart) or 1000mA active (Mini-Red T-Series)
- Multi-channel temperature monitoring (typically 4-8 NTC sensors by configuration)
- Audio-visual warning via Buzzer output; data logging via Bluetooth, IoT cloud, and optional factory 4G
- Compatibility with BIS IS 16893-certified LFP and NCM cells
4. Sourcing for OEM Production
Three practical questions come up in every OEM project:
Will it work with my motor controller?
Mini-Red and D Series provide UART/RS485/CAN. Standard products use generic CAN; for OEM-specific protocols used by major Indian platforms, DALY can develop custom firmware — share your controller protocol during consultation for a timeline.
What about MOQ and lead time?
Standard variants with neutral packaging support lower MOQs; custom labelling, firmware, or hardware (connectors, sealing) raise the minimum. Samples typically reach India within a few weeks; production timing depends on order size and customisation.
Which certifications do I need?
For L-category EVs: AIS-156 Phase 2 (battery/BMS safety), BIS IS 16893 (cells), BIS IS 18237 (transport), and type approval via ICAT or ARAI. DALY's BMS is designed to meet AIS-156 Phase 2, with documentation support for the certification pathway on request.
Quick FAQ
Q1How do I choose between 80A, 100A, and 200A for an e-rickshaw?
A standard 1.5-2 kW, 48V e-rickshaw typically uses 80-100A (Mini-Red AK). Heavier 2.5-3 kW e-rickshaws or cargo three-wheelers typically use 150-200A (Mini-Red AM). Higher-power three-wheelers use 200-400A (Mini-Red AS). Size to your motor controller, terrain, and load — when unsure, go one tier up.
Q2Mini-Red AS and D Series are both 400A — which do I pick?
Both handle 400A continuous, but for different jobs. Mini-Red AS fits passenger e-rickshaws and standard cargo three-wheelers (lighter, Bluetooth/IoT, lower MOQ). D Series fits heavy LCV and industrial duty (3000g enclosure, three UART channels, 2A parallel limiting, 8-32S for higher voltage).
Q3Can DALY support AIS-156 certification?
The BMS is designed to meet AIS-156 Phase 2, and DALY provides BMS-level test reports, EMC and temperature data, and engineering support during ICAT/ARAI testing, on request. Vehicle-level type approval remains the OEM's process.
About DALY
DALY designs and manufactures lithium BMS for OEMs and pack manufacturers, with products used in 130+ countries. Founded in 2015, it operates under ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 with CE and RoHS compliance; R-series products are designed to meet UL standards. For Indian high-current EV applications, the Mini-Red and D Series cover 80A through 800A from one product family.
