How to Choose the Right BMS Current for an E-Rickshaw in India

This guide answers one question for Indian E-Rickshaw OEMs and battery-pack manufacturers: how do you choose the right continuous-current rating for the BMS? It focuses on DALY A-Series Smart BMS current selection.

The key rule: Do not select the BMS from motor kW or the label “E-Rickshaw” alone. Size it from the battery-side current required under the vehicle’s intended operating conditions.
1. Why Current Selection Matters for Indian E-Rickshaws

Passenger E-Rickshaws can operate for long hours with frequent stop-start driving, changing passenger load, gradients and high ambient temperature. These conditions can make the battery-current profile more demanding than a simple cruising-current figure suggests.

This does not mean that every Indian E-Rickshaw should automatically use a larger BMS. It means the BMS should be checked against the most demanding intended legal operating condition, including maximum permitted load, route and temperature.

2. Start with Battery-Side Current, Not Motor Power Alone

Motor power is useful background information, but it does not uniquely determine BMS current. Battery current also depends on pack voltage, controller limits, acceleration demand, vehicle mass, passenger load, gradients and drivetrain conditions.

Before choosing 80A, 100A, 150A or another current tier, confirm these four values:

✓ Expected continuous battery current during normal service

✓ Controller maximum battery-side current

✓ Peak battery current

✓ Peak-current duration and frequency

If regenerative braking is used, also confirm the maximum regenerative charging current.

3. Then Check the Real Operating Conditions

Route Flat urban roads, repeated flyovers or gradients
Duty Daily operating hours and stop-start frequency
Temperature Maximum ambient temperature and battery-enclosure ventilation

Do not use unlawful overloading as the design target. If field use is expected to be demanding, validate the current and thermal requirement using the vehicle’s permitted operating envelope and actual controller/load data.

4. Match the Verified Requirement to DALY A-Series Smart BMS

DALY A-Series Smart BMS provides continuous-current options from 40A to 400A. For an E-Rickshaw project, the table below should be read as a current-selection ladder, not as a fixed vehicle-to-model recommendation.

A-Series Continuous Current Selection Rule
AH 40A / 60A Consider only if the verified continuous-current requirement fits this tier.
AK 80A / 100A Check sustained current, controller limit and peak-current profile.
AM 150A / 200A Evaluate when the verified project requirement reaches this current tier.
AS 250A / 300A / 400A Use only for a verified higher-current requirement, not simply because the vehicle works under heavy duty.

The continuous-current rating is only one part of final selection. Battery chemistry, exact series-cell count, peak-current capability, installation and thermal conditions must also match the selected product specification.

5. A Simple Example: Is 100A Enough?

Suppose an E-Rickshaw project is considering a 100A BMS. Do not approve the 100A option only because the vehicle is commonly described as a “100A application.” First confirm whether the expected continuous battery current stays within the product’s verified capability under the intended load and temperature, and whether the required peak current and duration are also supported.

If those conditions are not confirmed, the correct next step is not automatically to move to 150A. The correct next step is to complete the current and thermal data, then select the appropriate A-Series tier.

6. AIS-156: One Necessary Reminder

For Indian L-category EV projects within the scope of AIS-156, BMS safety functions are evaluated as part of the rechargeable electrical energy storage system (REESS). Amendment 3 identifies over-charge, over-discharge, over-temperature, overcurrent and short-circuit protection among the BMS safety features verified during REESS testing.
